I don't usually have much issues with not being able to write something. I can always write something - be it original or fanfiction. So I get asked a lot:
What really inspires me?
1. Movies
Especially dystopian, fantasy, fairy tale. These are mostly what I watch anyway, but they just seem to give me this extra boost. I watched "He's Just Not That Into You" last night and a few lines from that movie have inspired another story idea for me.
2. Music
Pop music, lyrically awesome, and witty stuff. Jessie J, Cher Lloyd, and Ed Sheeran are mainly my most listened to people when I'm looking to write.
- If I'm looking to write angst:
- Hollywood Undead, My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy
- If I'm looking to write sappy love:
- Ed Sheeran, Nina Nesbitt, Celtic Woman
- Fantasy:
- Celtic Woman, Halia Meguid, Disney songs
- Sad/Death scenes:
- Halia Meguid, One Republic, Adele, Emeli Sande
Certain words or phrases that I hear out of context, or even in context, or certain things such as "sugary purple" or "lion's den" can trigger story ideas just by the image it gives me. ("Sugary Purple" would be a short story about a young girl that died in a car accident and her sister/mom was packing up her room. "Lion's Den" envokes a more Harry Potter fanfic scene within me about someone from another house falling in love with a Gryffindor and going into the "lion's den").
4. History
History is HUGE in my stories. The ancient Greek/Egyptian/Roman era fascinates me to no end. I love the culture, the dieties, etc. It's all amazing. Going up in history, to more present times, there's the Elizabethan era, which is just so beautiful. The Colonial era is very war-filled for me, and I love it to death. The Victorian era has just about everything in it - forbidden love, [un]necessary evil, war, and division. Then there's the 1940s with tearful goodbyes, the swing music, and the fly boys.
5. Other stories
Be it fanfiction or just novels, reading other stories makes me think in overdrive about what story I would love to read. And that usually leads to a good fanfiction story about that specific novel, or inspiration to put into my own original novel.
Hope this gave you some insight into my overimaginative mind!
Daerwyn
